The thing I'm always trying to get people to do

is look over the fence

at the space beyond

outside the area

where we live our lives.

My efforts are often in vain

because people intuitively understand

how much of a rug-pull

of reality

they can handle right now.

And I don't blame them

especially at times like these.

Looking over the fence is fucking uncomfortable.

Going there is even worse.

But this is what made us human.

Long before we had fences

we've always used reason and intuition together

to look up

look out

and find a path to the place we want to go.

This is quite literally how our species spread across the planet.

In the modern age this is discouraged

because of the size and complexity of our societies

the sheer volume of global human biomass

and the mind-boggling variety of human experiences

recorded across billions of brains and bodies

there is now a need to create more sophisticated mechanisms of control.

It takes more than a tall building and some tetchy guys on horseback to keep a lid on things now.

The carrot and the whip - sorry 'stick' have gone underground.

Into the unconscious

Now if you want control you control attention.

What gets seen and what doesn't. What's in the frame. and what isn't.

This tells you unconsciously what to accept as right and wrong. Good and bad. Accurate and false. Correct and incorrect.

Both you and I mistake what's in the frame for reality.

And when this happens, it's easy to accidentally start pushing someone else's agenda instead of your own.

William Burroughs said it best.

"The best agent is an unconscious agent."

Whom do you not know you are serving?
