Building a Care Economy

Humanity lives on a spectrum.

On one end are people who think shortly

about their own needs and wants and nothing else.

On the other end of the spectrum, are people who think into the past and the future, and about the wellbeing of all those born and those yet to be.

And to over-simplify, the people in the first camp never go anywhere. They stay behind their own high walls, while those who care explore and connect.

Humany history is littered with wanderers who often come to the same conclusions.

  • Everything is connected.
  • Sensitivity is a super power.
  • Identify and dissolve contradictions outside and inside yourself.
  • Life is important
  • Individual experience matters
  • But so does collective restraint
  • Don't concentrate power except in short bursts, it leads to stupidity and waste.
  • Practice makes process, and process improves with practice. Perfect is not a thing.
  • Focus on creating value, not generating profit.
  • It usually pays to expand your perspective. After all, we're intergalactic hominids on a grand voyage through space.

At Sidewalk Alchemy, we think our species' highest priority is the reduction of Total Gross Suffering on planet earth and that through the practice of Wandering we can develop Houses of Fire, a metaphorical, and later a physical place of Resource + Refuge focused on creating individual and collective resilience.

It is our experience that wanderers often contribute to revolutionary work.

Paracelsus and his explorations revolutionized medicine.

Ibn Battuta's travels expanded the Arab worldview and brought the world closer together.

Mark Twain's journeys gave him the perspective to shape American entertainment.

There are thousands of examples throughout history of people who explored a little more of the map, and later dedicated themselves to work that made things easier for other people.

Houses of Fire will illuminate the world.

Here's three essays that dive deeper into what it means for our species to think of ourselves as Intergalactic Hominids.
